Mediation
As an experienced mediator, Nick provides a structured process to help resolve conflicts and disputes between parties. Using a collaborative approach, he facilitates civil and confidential conversations that guide parties toward amicable and sustainable agreements.
Mediation is a form of alternative dispute resolution (ADR) that involves an impartial third party—the mediator—who helps individuals or groups reach an agreement without needing to go to court. Unlike arbitration, where the arbitrator makes a binding decision, the mediation process is focused on helping the parties find a voluntary and mutually beneficial resolution. Nick’s role as a mediator is to facilitate communication, identify common interests, and guide the process toward a solution that satisfies all parties.
Mediation is particularly effective because it emphasizes collaboration over confrontation. Nick uses a collaborative approach that encourages open dialogue and respectful exchanges, allowing parties to express their views and concerns in a safe environment. Rather than trying to “win” a dispute, the goal in mediation is for all parties to work together toward a solution that meets their needs and preserves relationships. This makes mediation especially useful in cases where ongoing interactions—such as those within and between communities—are important.
A key part of the mediation process is maintaining confidentiality and civility. Nick ensures that conversations during mediation remain private, cultivating an atmosphere of trust where parties feel comfortable discussing sensitive issues. By setting a tone of respect and impartiality, he fosters civil discussions that help the parties engage in productive negotiations, reducing the emotional stress often associated with conflicts. Confidentiality in mediation also allows parties to explore creative solutions they might not consider in more adversarial settings.
Throughout the mediation process, Nick guides the parties step by step, helping them identify their shared interests and explore options for resolution. He helps them shift from positions—what each side wants—to interests—why they want it. By focusing on underlying needs and goals rather than rigid demands, mediation opens the door to more flexible and creative outcomes. This approach leads to agreements that are not only amicable but also sustainable in the long term, addressing the root causes of the conflict and building frameworks to prevent or resolve future disputes.
An active member of the conflict resolution community, Nick is president-elect of the Association for Conflict Resolution’s Greater New York chapter (ACR-GNY), where he hosts FORUM., a series of monthly conversations with distinguished leaders in the field. He also represents Mediators Beyond Borders International at the United Nations High-level Political Forum.
